Astrology could be described as the study of correspondences between cosmic patterns and human experience. These cosmic patterns are differentiated primarily in three ways: according to the relationships of the various planets (including the Sun and Moon) to one another; according to each planet's relationship to the Earth; and according to the relationship of the planets to the signs of the zodiac.

It is this third differentiation which formed the content of the earliest horoscopy, that of the Babylonians, dating from the fifth century BC (where the term "horoscopy" denotes the practice of casting horoscopes).
